Yes, but did the Indian boy perform the surgery at his workplace or his home?

He certainly has more experience with female genitalia and reproductive organs than I did when I was 15. I don't this counts as 3rd base though.

Uh, I don't think

Hey, why not... It's not like the 15-year-old son was flying an airplane or anything.

My doctor looks like he's 15, too. I hear that's common as you get older.

The article says she didn't give her consent.
posted by amyms at 5:31 AM on June 22, 2007

Yeah, she didn't know it was going to be done until after, or it may be that she wasn't told. Now that the video disappeared, the father is just claiming he 'watched' the procedure.

I had a lot of experience, including a Caesarean, but it all went "moo".

Yeah, but he didn't have to explain what he was doing in the barn with his pants down.

I have a vague inkling that you're suggesting something untoward, there. I have to deny it in no uncertain terms. Sheesh. With a cow? Ew.
That kind of experience went "Woof! Woof!"

Hey, there was more than one record set here.

The baby set the record for being delivered by the youngest fake-doctor ever.

That's totally something you can put on your college admissions, right?

I performed an ovariohysterectomy on my dog when I was eighteen. Half an hour start to finish.

Once you have a basic knowledge of sutures and ligatures, most soft tissue surgery is well within the abilities of a dextrous amateur.

What they don't mention in the article, and is somewhat mitigating really, is that when he was done with her, he re-clawed 5 cats under the watchful eye of an experienced veterinarian. This kid is a hero.

Who would volunteer to let a 15 year old perform surgery on them, when there are more experienced people around?

Yes, but he's a meat eating Christian, so he'll still get pilloried on MetaFilter.

I'm somewhat surprised that their behavior is being attributed to a desire to hit a world record. Is there any money in that, or is it just the result of some weird mania?

Pollomacho is the only one who seems to get it. This was not a 57 Chevy the father was letting his son work on. This was a human being who went into this procedure with the full expectation that an actual doctor, not an amateur, no matter how talented, would be taking care of her.

Her trust was violated, and her life was put at risk.

Do you know how c/secs are performed? The uterus is pulled outside of the body, cut open, and the baby has to be carefully removed, along with all the placenta, to avoid hemorrhaging and infection. It's not a minor operation. Bowel perforations and other nasty accidents are not that unusual...nicking the fetus' body, also a risk.

For those of you non-uterus-bearing types who don't see the big deal (or think it's funny)...how about a "talented" teenager performing a liver transplant on you? Or hey, working on your testicles? Appendectomy? Without your consent...how would that make you feel?

This patient was treated like a fetal pig in a biology class. She is a human being, and like all of us, deserves better than some smart ass doctor turning his kid lose on her so he could learn something or set some sort of record. I also happen to find it not surprising that it was a male doctor doing this to a female patient in a society that considers women less than full persons. Would he have done this to a male patient? I doubt it.

Jesus.

That's pretty messed up right there, even more so if the woman had no idea it was going to happen. Wonder if they can yank the Dad's license or censure him in some way?
posted by Talanvor at 10:41 AM on June 22, 2007

But he had the woman's husband's permission?!? Surely, that's sufficient, I mean you couldn't have to expect a woman to give consent! What if her opinion differed from his?!?

I'm thinking either your friend has really, really, really, short arms, or else the baby's mother was a large farm animal.
