As part of Metafilter fundraising, our auction opened last night. See Metatalk to learn more or discuss.

There are some really nice items for sale and I hope everyone will take a look! I'm particularly excited about the art photography by Mefites:

Felicity Green (Metafilter's very own mygothlaundry) takes photos and develops gelatin silver prints in a darkroom, including Piggy Piggy which comes mounted and ready for framing. There are a few other pieces scattered about the auction, so take a look around.

Then, down in the southwest, Chris Vreeland has a number of atmospheric natural studies playing on shadow and light, like this one, my favourite of the three they've offered, called Dune and Vine.

Mike Hall has created a gallery of photos for the winner of this auction to choose from (the challenge is that winner can only pick one). They'll be printed on metal and float mounted so will have a really cool modern look to them (plus no need to worry about framing).

just to contextualise this, Metafilter has basically run out of money.

"In the past 18 months, Metafilter has spent $57k more than it has taken in. Each month saw expenses exceed revenue. . . .the site's cash reserves were siphoned to make up the shortfall. There is no longer enough money in Metafilter’s savings to cover these ongoing shortfalls.

Monthly operating expenses are currently about $20k per month, based on September 2022’s expenses.

Average monthly income from recurring donations, the main source of Metafilter’s income, is currently estimated at $14k/month."
