But is there Monopoly Monopoly?
posted by filthy light thief at 4:39 PM on July 1, 2017 [1 favorite]

“But Monopoly isn’t actually fun,” people invariably complain, forgetting that the entire point of Monopoly was originally to be an educational tool to teach about the problems of an unregulated housing market.

Something about that feels fundamentally American on a deep and profound level, actually.

Haha, I used to work for a domain registrar, and there were sets and sets of TLD Monopoly sitting around the office. I am told that our partners from Germany gave them to us.

I want Lego Angry Birds Star Wars Monopoly. But it has to somehow involve Apple.

Is the Monopoly bubble about to burst?

Have we reached peak Monopoly, or is there an undiscovered reservoir of Monopoly just waiting to be tapped?

Will research into alternative Monopoly's ever fulfill the promise of renewable Monopoly?

Maybe I should play a game by the actual rules someday. Childhood Monopoly house rules being pretty damn far from that! I think I was almost 30 before I learned the rule that people can bid on a unowned property that another player lands on, but does not buy. Also we ignored mortgaging, perhaps because we had no idea what that means.

It makes the game sort of fun, and not long at all. The reason games usually go forever? All that money people take for Free Parking completely screws up the mechanic. You're supposed to go bankrupt. Stop giving money away.

Right, but it's hard for kids to deal with that. They need the bailouts since they're too small to fail.

Offshore Engineer Monopoly is ~$230 for the one copy on Amazon. It's labeled "Collector's Edition" on the box.

So either:
a) Some people are genuine Monopoly variant collectors who just must get those sets;
b) A small group of rich, dedicated gamers are acquiring all copies of Monopoly variants so they can charge a lot of money for them as part of a meta-Monopoly game.

I feel this discussion is incomplete without a mention of the sublime Powers Monopoly variant: Monopoly meets Cosmic Encounters.

I'm a huge Monopoly fan (who absolutely refuses to play with money under Free Parking even if it's your house rule) and I won't purchase themed sets (happy with my Muppets one, thank you) but I'm a sucker for all the variants such as Monopoly City, Mega Monopoly, and U-Build Monopoly. I just hope that the upcoming Monopoly Gamer set is the start of a trend towards customizing themed sets toward the individual properties instead of just slapping a coat of paint on the game board and charging thirty bucks.
