There's been an interesting backlash against @dog_rates since the operator announced a sale of merchandise to benefit planned parenthood and then quickly backpedaled on the grounds that such a donation would be too political and because "Alienating a portion of my audience is stupid and unnecessary". Frankly selling hats that say "cute af" seems like an entirely stupid and unnecessary business to begin with, but i guess the guy has a business empire to build off of other people's pictures.

At least he credits the photographers unlike most of the other cute aggregators.

oh hey! thanks for that idea cyphill, next time I have to fill out an customs form on the plane, under occupation I'm putting down "cute aggregator".

I once made a post about East African chalupa seals.

Matt's going to give money to PP as he said he would. He said he knows he made a mistake by caving in. He's a young guy, and being a dude he didn't immediately know about the absolute unrelenting cruelty you invite by openly supporting pro-women causes on the internet. He seems like he'll do better.

Matt also appears on this week's Reply All podcast with a brief interview about the PP kerfuffle. He also relates one from back in January when he posted a pic of a dog at the Women's March. Someone got mad at him for that as a political statement and said "100% unfollowing" to which he replied "100% don't give a shit." He said this lost him 800 followers - but gained him 3600 new ones. That made me smile.

The tone of these reminds me very much of James Thurber's The Pet Department.

I've sent the dude pictures of my dog three times over six months. Never got a response. And my dog's 80/10 on a bad day.

Everything about this is so necessary and makes me SO DAMN HAPPY right now and I am glad Matt is giving the money to PP because I think the disappoint would be altogether too much.

100% will continue following!!

Dude's a college kid, albeit a highly ambitious one, trying to work out how his business should engage in a purely insane environment. It's not like he didn't make the donation. Cut him a little slack.

(He also told a follower who complained about a post that criticized Trump's climate change denial to fuck off, so there's that.)

A lot of people send him images of rugs. It's very mysterious!!!

Then why is the walrus Taiwanese?

Sometimes "They're good dogs Brent" is great shorthand for, "This person does not understand the internet." That one exchange justifies the existence of Twitter.

It's not ideal but I'll take "progressive person trying to keep a twitter feed/business apolitical" over a conservative dickbag who uses their business to push a shitty political agenda. I'd rather he just unabashedly and loudly support the things he believes but I understand why he made a different choice. He had a silly idea for a silly twitter feed that is way more successful than he could have anticipated and he's nervous navigating unknown waters.

It would be like buying a delicate, silly decorative egg at a thrift store that you have to carry home through a busy crowd and finding out it's actually a Faberge egg. You might not have cared if you got bumped and dropped the silly egg you bought on a whim but now you're carrying a potential path to a more prosperous future that'll shatter like the egg will if you drop it. All you have to do now is manage to avoid fucking it up. It doesn't help that a fourth of the crowd will very LOUDLY tell you you're fucking up if they think you're doing it wrong, even though everyone else knows you're not.

I'd like to think that I would do the right thing, always, even if the "the right thing" and "the right thing for the business" don't always appear to align. If the cause of my failure is that I did the right thing and the business suffered for it, I don't know that I'd want to be successful at that business any way. BUT, I've never had to put that to the test so who knows what I'd do. Instead, when I see businesses of whatever kind doing the right thing despite the consequences, I'll go out of my way to support it.

Now, how long until this thread is nothing but people sharing pics of their dogs?
