As I understand it, they were shooting around the same time, but the resemblance to The Raid is rather unfortunate.

More seriously, this looks far better than I'd anticipated. Not that it'll be good per se, but Karl Urban looks like a very solid choice and the uniform is acceptable despite the lack of giant gold eagle. Need to see more of the Lawmaster.

They seem to be taking a Christopher Nolan approach, and setting this in a halfway-realistic world. With all the location shots Mega-City One looks like a real city on the ground, anyway.

I've always liked Ebert's idea (which I'm sure lots of other people have also had, but I heard it first from him) that remakes shouldn't be of great classic movies, but rather movies that had interesting ideas or good premises, but failed in the execution.

Y'aknow, the comics were fun and funny, but they were also tremendously amoral and cheesy.
I'm not saying I won't watch this, I'm saying I can think of at least a dozen properties off the top of my head that I'd be more excited to see.

The comics have been around since 1977, and have become a huge and varied source of material. You could do a hundred different takes on this movie and still be faithful to the print stories.

Well, I read a crapload of Judge Dredd comics when I was a yoot, and I am both excited and already disappointed about this. It looks a hell of a lot closer than the 1995 Stallone/Rob Schnieder shitfest (Judge Dredd without his helmet? Whu?) but it still doesn't look even close to right. That's not Mega City One - it's some slightly more Mega City One version of Nolan's Gotham City.
This one looks like it is going to miss the abject weirdness of the comics. They were not this dour grey thing - they were brightly colored and bizarre.

Firstly, I want to say that while I usually like your comments, Fearfulsymmetry, I don't think this one gives the proper context and appreciation of Judge Dredd. He's been appearing since 1977 in 2000 AD, and that mag has been where almost all of the great British comic book creators of the 80s have come out of. Dredd is an iconic character. You think that social commentary on a fictional police state was over when Orwell wrote 1984? Well the writers for Judge Dredd blew it up and then were fined 10,000 credits for littering.
I know, this is a another movie, and hopefully one that will get the character right. And by that I mean the one thing, the very simple obvious thing that the rather terrible 90's movie got so very wrong. Dredd never is shown with his helmet off.

It'll be interesting to see if the current vogue for turning cops into soldiers will somehow be reflected, however accidentally, in this film. I kind of felt, watching the trailer, how I did watching movies post 9/11 in which New York City gets destroyed. Sort of like, wait, you're trying to entertain me how?

The drug in the trailer is worryingly similar to cake from Brass Eye. Also, Judge Dredd may be a thug but he isn't a barbarian and doesn't sentence people to death (just shoots them up in the line of duty).

You could write an essay on the strange relationship between Judge Dredd and British values. (No doubt sombody already has.) It's fascinating how a strict authoritarian character that started as a sort of dark gothic parody of American vigilantes like Dirty Harry somehow resonated with its readers, captivating generations of British youth in a country where the police aren't supposed to carry guns.

I should add that they filmed this like 2 years ago, so The Raid could actually have been written afterwards.
That being said a Block War is actually a pretty well established event in the Dredd universe.

True, but slums in developing countries have been around like...forever. I mean, The Raid is an Indonesian film but it feels like it could have been in Mexico, India, Bulgaria, Nigeria, or even China and still feel familiar. Similarly, it could have been set in the US in the 60s/70s (kinda like Assault on Precinct 13-ish) and still feel genuine.

FWIW the Judge Dredd that's running in 2000AD right now is my weekly dose of FUCKING AMAZING COMICS. It's seriously some of the best stuff John Wagner has ever written and that 2000ad has ever run.

The trailer lacks even the slightest hint of humour; that's possibly because pure action is an easier sell, but I doubt the movie will be packed with the quirky, satirical touches that make the comic work. Dredd is a gruff, tough character, but the world around him is lively, chaotic and wonderfully silly (Robocop and even Demolition Man had a few Dredd-like elements, this looks dreary and po-faced).
Basically I want to see Otto Sump in a secondary plotline.

Seems a bit like Punisher: War Zone (2008) wherein The Punisher goes through a whole building of varied criminals. While War Zone was substantially better than the (awful) 2004 adaptation, it had the same basic flaw of trying to make an anti-hero into a traditional hero. I have not read Dredd, but the character doesn't seem to be a traditional hero, so I can imagine the film could easily stray into similar territory.

OH KARL URBAN. I'm so glad now for my junior high obsession with Xena: Warrior Princess that introduced me to the guest-starring Entire Acting Fleet Of New Zealand. Ever since, big action movies have been a game of "Hey! It's That Guy!" (Especially after The Lord of the Rings.)
In conclusion, Karl Urban is damn fine-looking man and an actor talented enough to carry off surfer-blond hair and foam wings. Godspeed, New Zealand!

I'm hoping they'll become the new Wilhelm ScreamsI actually noticed a couple of different sounds from the Prometheus trailer a high pitched alarm (which was I think from the first alien movie) and also this descending tone right at the beginning. Plus the inception sound. It's really getting out of control. Maybe in a few years trailer soundtracks will all just be remixes of eachother. I loved how the trailer for the new batman uses a totally new sound, but how much you want to bet we'll start hearing "fishy pasta" chanting in trailers coming up? (and I like how the new trailer uses almost no sound at all for the first half of the trailer. Try ripping that off, philistines!)

Honestly, as a long-time Dredd reader, this was okay.
Just okay.
But everyone else has made a reference to my thinking. Why, there's even a reference to Otto Sump! (But not the Dark Judges ... for shame MeFi. That's obligatory!)
I'm hoping this movie works, because I think there are still good cinematic stories to be told about Dredd, and I've warmed to the more realistic imagery of this film (even though the earlier film was closer to the somewhat outrageous comic look for the lawmasters et al), if they can find the right tone. I'm just not sure they have ... but I buy Urban as Dredd more than as Bones McCoy OR Stallone as Dredd.
And I'm hoping for more. And not too much fan service. PSI Anderson is enough. As much as I love the ABC Warriors and the Angel Gang, slipping some of that stuff into the earlier film was carb-loading of awesome, which did not work so well.
However, I will pay accept a reference to Mutants In Mega City One
And if this works I'm hoping for a Slaine movie/series.

I bet Urban wants to keep the Helmet on too. So when this thing sucks super hard, it won't contaminate his career too badly. I suspect Timothy Olyphant was glad to shave his head for Hitman, for the same reason.

Directed by Pete Travis, who was responsible for the frustrating Vantage Point. That movie should've been fun, and there's a fun movie in there somewhere, but Travis didn't have the right chops to tell the story in an entertaining way. My prediction of Dredd: 3D: meh.

I rewatched the Stallone Dredd in the past year. Man was it bad. Not "so bad it's good." Just bad. This one almost has to be better. I also rewatched Remo Williams for some reason. That also wasn't necessary.

Having watched it a few times (man, that Eurotrash song at the beginning is ... not good) I'm pretty sure that's not the ending in the last few seconds.

I can attest to it too, but I suspect any of the casefiles would be okay. The comic was written in 4-5page weekly episodes, and it's not hard to leap on in to the earlier ones. .

Volume 1 is a bit uneven - they hadn't really decided what to do with the character, sometimes he was capping perps next and right, other times he was a solid hero helping out the regular police(!).
Volume 2 has the fantastic and utterly nuts Cursed Earth megapixel, but that's by Pat Mills who never quite hitsvtge tone of the character either.
Then 2 finishes off with The Day the Law Died and 3 has a bunch of smaller stuff and the character is pretty established. We're on to The Judge Child for 4, which is the big space epic, and I think that also sets up the Sovs a little with The Black Atlantic - we'd seen them on the moon previously but now we were getting into there being a rivalry and maneuvering between MegaCity One and The Sov Block.
I love the Sovs. They are basically an 80s view of Russia with full on future communism and a rivalry with the decadent west and all that. They are about as subtle as Rocky IV, and of course the shadow of nuclear war is over every story they feature in.
Then you have 5, which not only introduces the Dark Judges and Judge Death - an undead mirror version of the Judge Dredd who reasons that all crime is commuted by the living, therefore life is a crime - it also has The Apocalypse War - the payoff to the Sov threat, which really, really earns its name.
I'd buy all five, but if you are going to read just one pick 2, 4 or 5, probably 5 just on The Apocalypse War alone.

1-19 are out in the UK from Rebellion, 1-5 are out in the US from Simon and Schuster. If you're in the UK... Well, I'd still consider starting with 5, it's great.

I was just thinking I'd like to see a movie adaptation of Judge Dredd that takes on the issues with combining judge/jury/executioner into a single role. Plus the Dark Judges and Psi Judge Anderson (cuz fanservice). This looks like this isn't it, but I'll see it anyway, just for the cityscape.

I'm still getting heat from my family for recommending we all see Judge Dredd opening night. Everything else was sold out and/or not time appropriate. To this day when I suggest that we go to the movies, I often hear: "WE COULD SEE JUDGE DREDD!" I get evil grins and then laughter and mockery.
This has a very Fifth Element feel to it but I still smell cheese.

The full thing is a pretty decent remix of La Roux by Skream, assuming that you're not averse to UK dubstep and, in the case of that link, can forgive the quality of the transfer from vinyl to Youtube.
Two things I find it hard to get over in the trailer - 1) Similarities to The Raid as mentioned upthread 2) Urban's lack of lantern jaw.
